About

Hello! I'm Mark B and I like to painting little worlds inspired by nature, folk stories and whimsy. My loves in life include tea, the BBC World Service, Tove Jansson, baking, Oliver Postgate, the colour green, David Attenborough documentaries, cloudless skies and silent movies. I also have a near superhuman capacity for eating cherry bakewells. I live in a small village with my girlfriend, Sarah, who makes jewellery (www.pennymasquerade.com) & a small puppy named Totoro.

Hello!

Apologies that things have seemed a little quiet on the Winter Smoke front of late - it’s been a rather busy time at home (new house & the accompanying fixing up of things, getting engaged & the wedding planning!) as well as on the art front. I’ve been doing an absolute tonne of behind the scenes work on this which will start showing up on here soon. All the changes I’ve been making should mean that I’m able to start creating a lot more prints and making everything more customisable, which I’m rather excited about.

In the meantime you can find a very short interview I did with the delightful Lisa from the Beautiful Days With Art blog, here:

I had completely forgotten that today is Roald Dahl Day, so in honour of it I’ve very quickly thrown together a doodle. Like a lot of people, Roald Dahl’s work loomed large in my childhood &, as such, is still a formative part of my life. Because of this it only seems apt to mark the day with the towering figure of the BFG!

Today’s doodle - Poison Ivy circa 1920s. I’m a bit of a silent movie geek &, partially because of this, I am absolutely fascinated by the 1920s. I’ve long said that if I ever won the lottery I’d love to make a silent B&W Batman film in the style of Louis Feuillade.
